NEMA Cultural Advocates

Cultural Advocates (CAs) are the Heartbeat of our CALD Communities.

From 2014 to 2015, the North East Multicultural Aged Care NEMACC project worked with dedicated CALD community people to strengthen and support their roles within their communities. This was achieved through facilitated personal development training over 4 sessions of 3 hours focussing on enhancing leadership and communication skills.

"CAs" take on a leadership role and provide a conduit between the community and the service providers in their Local Government Area (LGA). The NEMACC project has provided training to more than 30 dedicated people who wish to be principal supports within their local communities.

CAs provide practical support, community engagement and advocacy for members of the Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) community. Being a CA requires a strong knowledge of the local services. The role also necessitates being a key information provider of local community services. This particularly important in circumstances where there may be little understanding or knowledge of what services can be provided.

The Cultural Advocates are a lasting legacy of the NEMACC project and NEMA looks forward to continuing to assist the "CAs" in whatever way possible and practical into the future.
